A Little Help From My Friends – Showering

Posted on May 16, 2012 | 0 comments

Every week at Friends Life we focus on an Independent Living Skill, a skill required for one to live life on their own. The past few weeks we have focused on hygiene – brushing teeth, washing hands, germ prevention, and showering. Our friends have learned the necessary habits to stay clean and germ free! To help our friends learn about showering one of our neighbors brought over their dog, Otey, and we gave him a bath! Here’s a photo-guided tutorial on showering featuring our new friend, Otey! First, turn on the hose… er,...

Volunteer Appreciation Event

Posted on Apr 24, 2012 | 0 comments

On April 12th we had our first annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. This was just a small way for us to thank our volunteers for their incredible accomplishments. Our volunteers are a vital and thriving part of Friends Life’s successful community. Our volunteers provide hard-working hands, critical-thinking minds, creative ideas, dedicated time, heart-felt commitment and endless love for our Friends. Our volunteers have played this important role since the inception of Friends Life in 2008 and we are so grateful for their service with...

Easter is nearly here…

Posted on Apr 5, 2012 | 0 comments

Today was an easy and delightful day with our Friends. Programs have been devoted to discussions about and expressions of Easter. Along with the usual egg decorating and chocolate treats being consumed, pictures were made by each Friend of what they think Jesus and God look like. There was none of the resistance you might see from people without our kinds of disabilities, such as it’s impossible to know what they look like since it was a long time ago for Jesus, and God is, after all, physically invisible. The manifestations created were...

Spring Garden Work Day

Posted on Apr 3, 2012 | 0 comments

By: Leigh Lovett Tuesday, March 20 marked the First Day of Spring. Although the air outside was warm and the skies were clear, the Friends Life garden was still looking like it was the dead of winter. On Saturday, March 24, Friends Life staff, board members, families and volunteers all gathered to prepare the property gardens for the new season. Under the guidance of Marian Tidwell, who is better known...

By: Leigh Lovett As children, we are taught the simple differences between right and wrong by our parents. As we age, those lessons progress into what is socially acceptable. We learn these rules through life experiences. Experiences such as the first time we encounter a child our age that is somehow different than us, but we are not quite sure how. During this encounter, our parents tell us to “not stare and keep moving.” The seed is planted and this is what we learn to do; turn a blind eye. We learn later that this child has an...

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 0 comments

You are likely one of the estimated 100 million Americans that made a resolution list for 2012. Your list probably includes the ever popular “eating healthy” and “losing weight” goals. Most Americans have similar plans to achieve their goals, except for Friends Life board member, Logan Verner. Logan has made losing weight his top goal, but he is letting the world follow his journey. Why, because his second goal is to help a great organization. Logan has declared 2012 to be the year he finally gets in shape! He invites you to follow...

A Time to Reflect

Posted on Dec 1, 2011 | 0 comments

It seems like Christmas comes faster every year. With lights now adorning lamp post and stores slammed with people shopping for the perfect gift it would appear that we are in full stride holiday routine. Now, at least in our minds, is the perfect time to slow down, breathe deeply and reflect on the past year. For us, we have nothing but thanks to give, in fact it is the gift that we long to share with everyone. It may sound trite and insincere but we are indebted to a list of people this year. We are thankful for there involvement with...
