Joey Royer, one of Friends Life Community’s employment coaching clients, is celebrating his first month on the job as an employee at WilRo Inc., in Gallatin, TN. WilRo Inc. reached out to us because they were looking to become an inclusive workplace and wanted information and support. Patsy Webb, Joey’s employment coach, knew that Joey had recently moved to Gallatin and was looking for a new career where he could advance and learn new skills. Joey applied and in January started a full-time position at the company!

One month in, Joey is talking about all of the new skills he is learning — using manufacturing machines, safety in the workplace, measuring and cutting metal, knowing all of the different parts needed to build truck bodies, and getting to know new people. “People here are willing to help and get to know you. Now I have a career and not just a job, that means everything to me. I can make a living and be confident in myself,” Joey says.

According to Ashley Freeman, WilRo Inc.’s Chief People Officer: “If we had a team full of Joeys, we would be the best place to work in town. He has brought a smile and good attitude, which has taught our team a little more about humanity and kindness. When others say to Joey, ‘Have a good day,’ he always replies, ‘I am going to have a good day!'” Joey has grown to be such an asset to the team that he was voted Employee of the Month for January.

Employment coaching has been key to helping Joey find the job he has dreamed about and supporting him in all of the soft skills he needs to be successful. The staff at WilRo Inc. is committed to supporting him in learning the specific tasks needed in manufacturing, finding the roles that fit his talents, and helping him discover new skills he wants to grow into.

Joey and WilRo Inc.’s success story isn’t unique, and many employers have discovered the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. If your company is interested in diversifying its workforce, email admin@friendslife.org for more information.
