Artists at Friends Life Community have created a body of work that can be considered “gritty” or “street” art, incorporating text, spray paint, silk screen collage, graffiti-esque marks, and assemblage. These works assert their place in the gallery space, similar to the works of Basquiat, Banksy, and Shepard Fairy. Like the goal of many graffiti artists, our mission is to inform, spread the word, protest, and make a statement about our individuality.
Artists with developmental disabilities at Friends Life Community create original artwork that tells their own story. The process of self-expression and discovery is a way for these artists to communicate who they are and what is important to them. They connect with others through sharing their artwork in exhibitions and working collaboratively. Friends Life artists are professional artists and inspire others who work alongside them.
