October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a month dedicated to recognizing the contributions of individuals with disabilities in the workforce. It is imperative to distinguish the difference between celebrating an ideal and recognizing a reality. It is impossible to recognize the contributions of individuals with disabilities in the workforce if individuals with disabilities are not employed.

At Friends Life Community, we proudly support employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. We actively educate the community and provide thousands of hours of opportunities each year for individuals with disabilities to demonstrate the valuable contributions they provide to the workforce. Our Service Learning & Employment program and Employment Coaching services support employment through education for individuals with disabilities, employers, and community members.

Acknowledging NDEAM is critical to the positive progression of our culture and society. It is more than celebrating inclusion, it is advocating for equitable employment for people with disabilities at your workplace and standing beside them as peers on the job because you know the workplace is better, and each team members is better, when the team is diverse, accepting, integrated, and yes, inclusive. When employees stand together in the belief that every person, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, has a valuable role in our workforce, every employee has greater productivity, morale, and motivation. By acknowledging the talents, skills, and potential of individuals with disabilities, we foster a culture of diversity and inclusivity that benefits us all.

The month of NDEAM dates back to 1945, initially known as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” The event was later expanded to include all disabilities and renamed National Disability Employment Awareness Month in 1988. This observance aims to educate the public about disability employment issues and celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities.

At Friends Life Community, we are committed to creating a world where individuals with disabilities can thrive in the workforce. Many of our Weekday Program classes focus on skill development and job training, and our employment coaching can support job seekers and employers. We believe in breaking down barriers and building bridges to ensure every individual has access to meaningful employment opportunities.

This NDEAM, we are excited to launch our campaign, “DiverseTalent: Bridging Abilities, Building Futures.” Throughout the month, we’ll share inspiring stories, practical tips for creating inclusive workplaces, and resources promoting disability employment. Join us on this journey as we celebrate the achievements of individuals with disabilities and work towards a more inclusive society.

Throughout October, we’ll feature success stories, provide insights into workplace inclusivity, and highlight the remarkable individuals who make up an important, though often overlooked, part of the workforce. Together, we can make a positive impact and create a world where everyone’s talents are recognized and celebrated.

Stay tuned for more updates, and join our mission to bridge abilities and build brighter futures for all!
